Attractions and Recreational Activities

Residents and visitors are able to enjoy outdoor activities such as horseback riding, four wheeling, jeep tours, hiking, camping, canoeing, kayaking and fishing.

Attractions include Montezuma Castle National Monument, Montezuma Well (a separate location from Montezuma Castle), the Verde River, Fort Verde Historic State Park, Out of Africa Wildlife Park and Cliff Castle Casino, which has an arcade, other children activities, a bowling alley and several restaurants.

Community Facilities

For such a small rural community Camp Verde is fortunate to have the following amenities: a swimming pool, soccer and baseball fields, picnic sites, parks (including a skateboard park) a library and a satellite library facility in nearby Lake Montezuma. The Town is currently working to move forward with building a community park.

Fort Verde State Park

In May of 1865, a military Fort was established in Camp Verde to protect early settlers. The Fort is the best-preserved example of it’s time period in Arizona. Several of the original buildings still stand and living history programs are scheduled periodically, giving visitors a glimpse into Arizona’s history. Two popular annual park events include Fort Verde Days in the fall and History of the Soldier in the spring.

Fort Verde State Park is open daily from 10am - 4pm.

Montezuma Castle

With a commanding view of central Arizona’s Verde Valley, Montezuma Castle is an enduring legacy of a prehistoric American Indian people referred to as the Sinagua. The 20-room stone, timber and adobe dwelling is 80 to 90 percent intact, making it one of the best preserved cliff dwellings in the United States.

Montezuma Well is an oasis of life in the desert American Southwest. This collapsed limestone cavern, or sink, is 55 deep and 368 feet across, replenished each day with one and a half million gallons of water from subterranean warm springs. A community of unique aquatic animals found nowhere else in the world helps make this site a priceless natural wonder. Click here to read more…

Location: I-17 at Highway 260 (exit 287) and go east toward Camp Verde turning onto Finnie Flat Road into downtown Camp Verde. Take Montezuma Castle Highway out of town and at the blinking light, turn right to go to the Castle.
