About the Library
Welcome to exploring the library with your child! We hope this will be the beginning of a lifelong love of reading and learning. The library offers tools to help parents and children stay connected through linked accounts and use of a PIN. We encourage parents to read with their children and talk about books together. Parents have the right to oversee the reading of their children.
Patron Privacy
The library has developed policies that protect confidentiality while recognizing the rights and responsibilities of parents to monitor their child’s reading. It is the policy of the library to ensure the privacy of any patron who uses library services. To protect the privacy and safety of library users, personal information or information about a person’s presence in the library will not be given by phone.
Children in the Library
A parent, guardian, or caregiver must remain in the building while a child 10 or younger is attending a program.
- Children under the age of 5 must be accompanied by an adult or responsible caregiver (16 and up) at all times.
- Children between the ages of 5 and 10 must have an adult or responsible caregiver in the building at all times.
- Children 11 and over may be in the library unattended if behaving appropriately.
Library Cards
Sign up for a CVCL Library card online or in person to access print and online resources at home or in the library. A parent or legal guardian in possession of a minor child’s card is permitted all services regarding that card. Report a lost card immediately to prevent use by unauthorized persons.
TEMP Cards for Teens
Minors between the ages of 13 and 17 can get a Teen TEMP Library card that gives them access to CVCL resources only.
- Checkout 2 items at one time
- Full access to CVCL’s online resources
- No Holds allowed
- Expires 3 months after date of issue
Teens with a TEMP card can upgrade to a permanent library card with full privileges at YLN Libraries. The parent or guardian must visit the library with their ID and proof of residence to verify they are willing to take responsibility.
Linked Accounts & PIN Restrictions
Linked Accounts provide a way for users to manage multiple library accounts in the Yavapai Library Network Online catalog without logging in and out of each account to keep track of holds, checkouts, and renewals. Linked Accounts can link a child, partner, neighbor, friend, etc.
Set up of Linked Accounts is in the hands of the user, not the library. They are designed for families, caregivers, and neighbors who have permission to manage someone else’s library account. Users can link or unlink their accounts themselves.
Parents or guardians who wish to restrict their minor’s account with a PIN on the child’s card must see library staff. With this option the child cannot use the card unless the parent is present or gives them the PIN. Log into the online catalog to reset your PIN or visit us at the library for assistance.
Checkout
While a separate Children’s Library exists with materials specifically for younger patrons, parents should be aware that children also have access to all materials in the library. Library staff will not monitor or censor your child’s selections. It is your responsibility as a parent to be aware of what your child is checking out.
Fees & Fines
Parents are responsible for fees accrued on their minor child’s card. Materials owned by CVCL are not assessed overdue fines but items owned by other YLN libraries may be. Replacement charges for damaged or lost material may be assessed.
Internet & Wireless Access
Library card holders, including minors, automatically have Internet privileges. The parent/guardian is responsible to monitor a minor’s use of library computers and wireless network. Internet traffic is filtered in compliance with federal, state, and local laws and complies with the Children’s Internet Protection Act.
Public Computers
The library has Internet computers, laptops, tablets, mobile hotspots, and 6 online catalogs for public use. PC assistance for mobile devices and technology use is offered. Early literacy computers without Internet are available in the Children’s Library. Laptops, and tablets are available for use by kids in the Teen and Children’s Libraries.
